A Life in Images

Charleroi, Belgium

The industrial city of Charleroi, where Georges Lemaître was born on July 17, 1894. The city's coal mines and steel works shaped the world he grew up in — a world of hard matter and deep faith.

Military Service

Lemaître served as an artillery officer in the Belgian army during World War I. The experience of industrial warfare — and survival — deepened his faith and sharpened his sense of the fragility of human life.

Ordination to the Priesthood

Ordained a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Malines by Cardinal Mercier. From this day forward, Lemaître would carry both the cassock and the equation — priest and physicist, inseparably.

Cambridge University

Lemaître studied under Arthur Eddington at Cambridge — the man who had confirmed Einstein's general relativity. It was here that the seeds of the Big Bang theory were first planted.

Professor at Leuven

For nearly four decades, Lemaître taught mathematical physics at the Catholic University of Leuven. Students recalled his chalk-dusted cassock, his blackboard full of equations, and his habit of pausing to look out the window at the sky.

With Einstein, California

In 1933, Lemaître delivered lectures in California that Einstein attended. Upon hearing the full exposition of the expanding universe, Einstein stood and applauded — calling it the most beautiful explanation of creation he had ever heard.

The Pontifical Academy of Sciences

Elected to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1936, Lemaître served as its president from 1960 until his death. He navigated the delicate boundary between Church and science with grace and conviction.

The Observatory

Lemaître's work was theoretical — he worked from equations, not telescopes. But the observatories of his era confirmed what his mathematics had predicted: the universe is expanding, and it had a beginning.
